Repulsive and attractive depletion forces mediated by nonadsorbing polyelectrolytes in the Donnan limit

چکیده

In mixtures of colloids and nonadsorbing polyelectrolytes, a Donnan potential arises across the region between surfaces that are depleted polyelectrolyte rest system. This tends to shift density profile towards colloidal surface leads local accumulation polyelectrolytes. We derive zero-field theory for disjoining pressure two parallel flat plates. Polyelectrolyte is allowed enter confined interplate at cost conformational free energy penalty. The resulting shows crossover repulsive regime when separation gets smaller than size chain, followed by an attractive part. find quantitative match model self-consistent field computations take into account full Poisson-Boltzmann electrostatics.

Nontouching nanoparticle diclusters bound by repulsive and attractive Casimir forces.

We present a scheme for obtaining stable Casimir suspension of dielectric nontouching objects immersed in a fluid, validated here in various geometries consisting of ethanol-separated dielectric spheres and semi-infinite slabs. Stability is induced by the dispersion properties of real dielectric (monolithic) materials. A consequence of this effect is the possibility of stable configurations (cl...

Repulsive and attractive Casimir forces in a glide-symmetric geometry

We describe a three-dimensional geometry in which both attractive and repulsive Casimir forces arise using ordinary metallic materials, as computed via an exact numerical method no uncontrolled approximations . The geometry consists of a zipperlike, glide-symmetric structure formed of interleaved metal brackets attached to parallel plates—because of the interleaving pattern, a net repulsive for...

Large attractive depletion interactions in soft repulsive-sphere binary mixtures.

We consider binary mixtures of soft repulsive spherical particles and calculate the depletion interaction between two big spheres mediated by the fluid of small spheres, using different theoretical and simulation methods. The validity of the theoretical approach, a virial expansion in terms of the density of the small spheres, is checked against simulation results. Attention is given to the app...

Consequences of the balance between the repulsive and attractive forces in dense, non associated liquids

Current theories successfully predict the equilibrium structure of many simple liquids near their triple point from the repulsive molecular for~ alone. We prese~t a simple model substance whose liquid structure cannot be predIcted adequatel~ wIth only the repulsions. Furthermore, the model's crystal structure changes drasttcally upon the removal of the attractions. This failure for our model to...

Attractive and repulsive functions of Slit are mediated by different receptors in the Drosophila trachea.

Oxygen delivery in many animals is enabled by the formation of unicellular capillary tubes that penetrate target tissues to facilitate gas exchange. We show that the tortuous outgrowth of tracheal unicellular branches towards their target tissues is controlled by complex local interactions with target cells. Slit, a phylogenetically conserved axonal guidance signal, is expressed in several trac...
